D23: Things We Learned from Disney Entertainment
D23: the ultimate Disney fan event is happening this weekend, in Anaheim, California. As part of the Disney Entertainment presentation, Disney released a variety of information about upcoming projects!
WALT DISNEY ANIMATION STUDIOS
MOANA 2
Disney kicked off the night with more about Moana 2, the sequel to the beloved animated film Moana. They debuted a brand-new song, “We’re Back”, and also revealed a brand new teaser. The film opens in theaters November 27, 2024.
ZOOTOPIA 2
Fans were excited to learn about a sequel to 2016’s Zootopia! The film will be released November 2025. Disney describes this film as, “detectives Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde find themselves on the twisting trail of a mysterious reptile who arrives in Zootopia and turns the mammal metropolis upside down. To crack the case, Judy and Nick must go undercover to unexpected new parts of town, where their growing partnership is tested like never before. Ginnifer Goodwin, who returns to voice clever bunny Judy, greeted fans at D23, sharing a special look at the film that features a fugitive snake called Gary.” Joining the cast will be Ke Huy Quan as Gary.
FROZEN 3
Jennifer Lee joined the presentation to share concept art for Frozen 3, coming to theaters in 2027.
AVATAR
James Cameron, joined by stars Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña, announced the title for the third Avatar film, Avatar: Fire and Ash. It will open in theaters on December 19, 2025.
PIXAR ANIMATION STUDIOS
WIN OR LOSE
Pete Doctor talked about the release of Pixar’s first original series, Win or Lose. It will stream exclusively on Disney+ on December 6, 2024. The series will, “reveal what it feels like to be in the shoes of eight different characters—the insecure kids, their helicopter parents, even a lovesick umpire—as they prepare for a championship softball game.”
ELIO
More information was shared about Pixar’s upcoming film Elio, set to release on June 13, 2025. Greeting fans were the voice of Elio himself, Yonas Kibreab, and Zoe Saldaña, who lends her voice to Elio’s Aunt Olga.
HOPPERS
A new film was announced for 2026, titled Hoppers. The film will be about, “an animal lover who seizes an opportunity to use new technology to ‘hop’ her consciousness into a life-like robotic animal: an adorable beaver.”
TOY STORY 5
Toy Story 5 will be directed by Andrew Stanton, and sees our favorite toys go against this all new-threat to playtime — technology. It’s set to release in theaters on June 19, 2026.
INCREDIBLES 3
Brad Bird is developing the third film for The Incredibles, Incredibles 3.
MARVEL STUDIOS
Fans were treated to new looks at Agatha All Along, Captain America: Brave New World, Daredevil: Born Again, Ironheart, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
LUCASFILM
Disney also revealed new looks at Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, The Mandalorian and Grogu, and Andor.
DISNEY LIVE ACTION
MUFASA: THE LION KING
Lin-Manuel Miranda joined director Barry Jenkins to show a special look at the film with the new song, “I Always Wanted a Brother”.
DISNEY’S SNOW WHITE
Fans were treated to a first-look trailer at the live-action film starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot.
LILO & STITCH
Fans were able to get a glimpse at the live-action Stitch, who caused mayhem in a video through the Honda Center.
TRON: ARES
The cast appeared on stage, and it was revealed that there would be music from Nine Inch Nails — it’s set to release on October 10, 2025 in theaters.
FREAKIER FRIDAY
Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan appeared to reveal the title, and the film is heading to theaters in 2025.
