Wrexham AFC, the soccer team purchased by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in 2020, is set to make its United States debut this summer. The new million-dollar, winner-take-all 7-on-7 soccer tournament is set to take place in Cary, North Carolina June 01-04.
While a final roster has yet to be decided, Wrexham plans to include club legends, including players featured in the Hulu documentary series — Welcome to Wrexham. Should the club win the million-dollar prize, the plan is to donate half to continue to give back to the Welsh community.
The Soccer Tournament was announced in October and will feature 32 teams in a format similar to the World Cup. Three group matches will take place before a 16-team single-elimination stage, and will also include additional high-profile teams — US Women, a team of former U.S. Women national team players organized by Heather O’Reilly; and Conrad & Beasley United, which is being organized by former men’s World Cup veterans Jimmy Conrad and DaMarcus Beasley.
Reynolds and McElhenney created a special video for their fans to celebrate the announcement, which can be viewed below.
