In a recasting, Paul Mescal is set to join the cast of Merrily We Roll Along! Richard Linklater’s ambitious film is an adaptation of the classic Stephen Sondheim musical that follows Franklin Shepard (Mescal), a Broadway composer whose fractured relationship with his former writing partner Charley (Ben Platt) and theater critic Mary (Beanie Feldstein) haunts the trio. The musical unfolds in reverse chronological order and tracks the breakdown of their friendships over the course of 20 years.

Linklater plans to shoot the film over roughly the same time period, filming scenes every year as needed much like his hit Boyhood. The project was first announced in 2019. Merrily We Roll Along is also currently playing to sold out crowds and critical acclaim Off-Broadway with Daniel Radcliffe (Charley), Jonathan Groff (Franklin), and Lindsay Mendez (Mary) in the lead roles.
