‘The Umbrella Academy’: Season 3 Trailer Introduces the Sparrows, Officially

The Hargreeves siblings are back for season 3, and there are seven more of them.

The official synopsis gives some details on what we can expect from this season:

After putting a stop to 1963’s doomsday, the Umbrella Academy return home to the present, convinced they prevented the initial apocalypse and fixed this godforsaken timeline once and for all. But after a brief moment of celebration, they realize things aren’t exactly (okay, not at all) how they left them. Enter the Sparrow Academy. Smart, stylish, and about as warm as a sea of icebergs, the Sparrows immediately clash with the Umbrellas in a violent face-off that turns out to be the least of everyone’s concerns. Navigating challenges, losses, and surprises of their own – and dealing with an unidentified destructive entity wreaking havoc in the Universe (something they may have caused) — now all they need to do is convince Dad’s new and possibly better family to help them put right what their arrival made wrong. Will they find a way back to their pre-apocalyptic lives? Or is this new world about to reveal more than just a hiccup in the timeline?

A teaser released yesterday also brought in a key location: the alternate dimension known as Hotel Oblivian. A key location from the third volume, Hotel Oblivion, serves as a supervillain prison controlled by Reginald Hargreeves. Upon Hargreeves’ death, the supervillains stage a breakout and wreak havoc on the Earth.

While it would seem like the Brellys and the Sparrows are mortal enemies, cooperation may be in the cards. In the comics, the Umbrella Academy and the Sparrow Academy do end up working together to defeat the villains who escaped from Hotel Oblivion, although the origins of the Sparrows are vastly different.

The Umbrella Academy is based on the comics by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá that follows the levels of seven of 43 babies all born of a supernatural event to random women who were not pregnant on October 1, 1989. Adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves to form a superhero team, the Hargreeves turn out to be somewhat of a … disappointment.

The series stars Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, Elliot Page, and Ritu Arya. Newcomers include Justin Cornwell, Britne Oldford, Jake Epstein, Genesis Rodriguez, Cazzie David, and Euphoria‘s Javon Walton.

The Umbrella Academy season 3 will premiere on Netflix on June 22. Stay tuned for all of our series coverage, including episodic recaps, reviews, and more!
