It’s been nearly 45 years since Canadian teen drama Degrassi began and five years since the latest series, Degrassi: Next Class ended. Now, the popular franchise will be getting yet another show, this time on HBO Max.

HBO Max has announced that a new series from the long-running franchise is in development. The show’s official synopsis reads:

A reprise of the original teen drama, Degrassi is a character-driven series about the high school experience and the thrilling, often painful journey of self-discovery. Set in Toronto, the new series explores a group of teenagers and school faculty living in the shadow of events that both bind them together and tear them apart. The show travels deep into the hearts and homes of diverse, complicated characters, as they struggle to find their new normal, reaching for hope, redemption and love.

Degrassi will mark the sixth series in the franchise, following The Kids of Degrassi Street, Degrassi Junior High, Degrassi High, Degrassi: The Next Generation and Degrassi: Next Class.

The Next Generation, which saw big popularity stateside after it found a U.S. home on The N, then later TeenNick, will also be added to HBO Max later this year with the entire 14-season library.

The new series will include 10 hour-long episodes and premiere sometime in 2023. It’s unknown whether Degrassi will be a continuation of the franchise or a complete reboot, or if there will be any cameos from previous series. Hopefully more information is revealed soon!
