Based on and inspired by Beyoncé’s previous album The Lion King: The Gift, Black is King is meant to pay homage to Black culture, celebrating and uplifting the Black experience by exploring the journey of Black families and culture throughout the ages by “[reimagining] the lessons of The Lion King for today’s young kings and queens in search of their own crowns.” Knowles has always been an activist for her community, having been very outspoken about racial equality in wake of the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. She recently released a surprise single, “Black Parade”, with the benefits going towards Black-owned businesses.
Guest appearances are set to happen, though exactly who will show up in the production is only speculation at this point. Artists involved in The Lion King: The Gift include Kendrick Lamar, Childish Gambino, Jay-Z, and Tierra Whack. Regardless of who else pops up in what will undeniably be a masterpiece, we can’t wait to witness it with our own eyes.
Black is King drops on July 31 on Disney+. Don’t miss it!
