Andy Serkis, the actor who played Gollum in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movie trilogies, will be live-streaming himself reading the book The Hobbit cover-to-cover in a 12-hour “Hobbitathon” on May 8.
The Hobbit is the prequel to The Lord of the Rings series and tells the tale of hobbit Bilbo Baggins as he joins a company of dwarves on their quest to reclaim their home and treasure in the Lonely Mountain, which has been taken by the dragon, Smaug.

Serkis is asking for donations to raise money for two charities: Best Beginnings and NHS Charities Together. Best Beginnings helps support the mental and physical health of pregnant people or new families in the UK and NHS Charities Together helps support NHS staff, volunteers and patients. If the donations reach the target of £100,000 then Serkis has hinted there may be a special surprise during the marathon.
The marathon will begin 10 a.m. GMT. For more details and to donate, visit the GoFundMe page. The link to the live-stream will also be posted on the page when it is available.
