‘Harriet’ Drops First Trailer

The new biopic based on Harriet Tubman — a genuine hero who freed dozens of slaves via the Underground Railroad — just dropped its first trailer.

Cynthia Erivo (Bad Times at El Royale) plays the title character, and she is joined by Leslie Odom, Jr. (Hamilton: An American Musical) as William Still and Janelle Monáe (Moonlight) as Maria.

Harriet Tubman was born into slavery, but managed to escape the plantation where she and her family were kept with several other slaves, and once she made it to freedom she decided to go back and free the others. She was an abolitionist, an activist, and in her later years a suffragette. During the Civil War she also joined the Union Army in the role of both cook and nurse and later took on the mantle of armed scout and spy.

The trailer looks incredible and gives us glimpses of Harriet’s inspiring life. There are already whisperings of an Oscar nomination, and I would definitely not be surprised if the movie earned one (or more) just by the looks of the trailer.

Harriet arrives in theaters on November 1. Be sure not to miss this one!
