‘The Upside of Unrequited’ by Becky Albertalli To Be Adapted For Film

Becky Albertalli’s Simonverse is coming to the big screen once again! The rights to Albertalli’s second book, The Upside of Unrequited, have been acquired by Shakespeare Sisters, a U.K. production company. Variety was the first to announce the news.

The script will be written and directed by Hillary Shakespeare and Anna-Elizabeth Shakespeare known for their film Soundtrack to Sixteen. Albertalli will join as an executive producer.

The Upside of Unrequited follows 17-year-old Molly Peskin-Suso, who’s an expert in unrequited crushes. Despite her twin sister Cassie telling her to woman up, Molly’s would rather those crushes stay unrequited than face rejection. But when Molly begins a new job and meets Reid, her co-worker, another unrequited crush begins to brew.

Becky Albertalli is the bestselling author of Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda. The book was adapted into the 2018 film Love, Simon which spawned the Hulu original series Love, Victor. In the Simonverse, she has also written Leah on the Offbeat and the most recent novella Love, Creekwood. Albertalli co-authored What If It’s Us and the upcoming Here’s to Us with Adam Silvera, as well as Yes No Maybe So with Aisha Saeed. Albertalli’s next book, titled Kate in Waiting releases this month on April 20.
