‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ Lands Five Academy Award Nominations

The nominees for the 93rd Annual Academy Awards have finally arrived! Arguably one of the biggest nights during award season, the Academy Awards honor the best feats in filmmaking. Leading the charge in nominations is the streaming platform Netflix, and included among their nominees is Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

The film earned five nominations total:

Best Actor in a Leading Role: Chadwick Boseman

Best Actress in a Leading Role: Viola Davis

Best Costume Design: Ann Roth

Best Makeup and Hairstyling: Sergio Lopez-Rivera, Mia Neal, Jamika Wilson

Best Production Design: Production Design, Mark Ricker; Set Decoration, Karen O’Hara and Diana Stoughton

Adapted from the August Wilson stage play, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is set in 1927 Chicago and follows Ma Rainey, “The Mother of the Blues,” as she and her band hold a recording session. Meanwhile, she must battle with her ambitious horn player Levee and white management set on trying to control her.
