With the start of a new week came a new track for the #ShinodaProduceMe project! Starting off Monday’s live stream, Mike Shinoda first decided to pay homage to the fact it was International Women’s Day by playing “Lillith” by Plexxaglass, which was the previous track he produced on his Twitch channel and, coincidentally, a song about female empowerment and autonomy. Afterward, Shinoda introduced the new song he’d be producing that day titled “Mixed Signals” by an artist named CHANDLER. He began by playing CHANDLER’s original demo, which consisted of piano and vocal tracks.

“He sent [the song] in a format that I’ve seen before. It’s just like parts basically … it’s arranged in the shape of the song, but like, for example, the layers of vocals he put in the first chorus, he didn’t put them in the second chorus or the third chorus … that indicates to me that … I’m supposed to copy paste them into the other ones … so I’m supposed to structure it.”

Shinoda began production by organizing the multitude of vocal tracks and adding a few changes to them, such as auto tune. He then took a look at the piano CHANDLER included, more specifically the chords being played in the piano track. After hearing them, both with the vocal and without it, Shinoda decided he wanted to use different chords. He created new ones on his keyboard and played them with the vocal to see if the new addition was a good fit, before tightening up the mix and taking a small break from the production to pick up a FaceTime call from Grandson, a fellow musician Shinoda has collaborated with before. Shinoda then added more instruments and sounds to the track, including drums, synth, more keys and piano, and guitar harmonies.

“This chord progression, this might be the Axis of Awesome chord progression … I don’t know if these are the same four chords, but … I think because of the subject matter [of the song] … I kinda don’t want to use them — especially don’t want to use them the whole time. Like it’s just so plain, it’s kinda too boring.”

Official lyric video for “History” by CHANDLER

CHANDLER is a singer and songwriter based in Los Angles, CA that has quite a few music releases under his belt. A small portion of his music can be found on Spotify and Apple Music, such as the more recent singles “Jelly,” “Blame,” and “History.” The official lyric videos for “Jelly” and “History” can be found on CHANDLER’s YouTube channel. The bulk of CHANDLER’s music can be found on Apple Music and Deezer, including multiple different albums, such as Moonlight Melodies and Life Line, as well as other projects he’d been featured on.

If you weren’t able to see CHANDLER’s “Mixed Signals” be produced live by Mike Shinoda, you can still watch the Twitch replay below! Make sure to check out both CHANDLER’s music, as well as Shinoda’s previous production sessions.
