Review: Klaus Has Got It Under Control in ‘Tales From the Umbrella Academy: You Look Like Death’ Issue #5

The penultimate issue of Tales From the Umbrella Academy: You Look Like Death is available now!

The story of Klaus Hargreeves from Gerard Way and Shaun Simon (The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys), You Look Like Death issue #5 features art by I.N.J. Culbard, lettering from Nate Piekos, and a cover by The Umbrella Academy‘s Gabriel Bá, along with two variant covers from I.N.J. Culbard and Weshoyot Alvitre.

Klaus travels into the Void in search of the dead wife of the vampire chimp boss. While he’s there, Klaus’s author friend provides dangerous insight about want-to-be-starlet, Vivian. Vivian bombs a rehearsal, but it’s the cast and crew that really suffer.

Things all began to fall into place in Issue #4, Klaus dumps Vivian after The Gods of Hollywood revealed her true intentions for Klaus. Her arachnid powers and their origins are still a mystery, but were also no match for Klaus. Mr. Shivers also finally got a hold of The Séance, and his swift change of heart regarding Klaus’ use for him manifest — he wants Klaus to find his dead wife.

There are spoilers for issue #5 of You Look Like Death beyond this point!

Issue #5 took an unexpected turn, which actually should be expected from this team. We learn the truth about Shivers and his marriage, and we get a brief insight into Sir Reginald Hargreeves’ life not being quite what he anise-ipated. The vampire circle grew a little bit bigger and Klaus is ready to save everyone — but mostly himself.

A lot happened in this issue, setting up what is sure to be an epic finale in Issue #6. Klaus finally puts his creative mind to work and sets out on a plan sure to get him out of each and every predicament he’s managed to find himself in … which is quite a few. He is seemingly all in to help his friend, Lyle, who has been stuck in limbo in the Void waiting to find out if he’s going up or down. All of the people Klaus has met in Hollywood are in the same room, so this is about to get interesting.

This issue was an incredibly fun read and added more of spark to keep us looking forward to the final issue. Klaus has set out on what seems to be an impossible mission, and of course, when will he end up back the Umbrella Academy? Will we find out?

The art in this issue was particularly impressive as it took us on a journey to the grim and gruesome, up to the Gods and the Void in-between. The colors were gory and fearsome on some pages, and bright and intriguing on the next, a true testament to I.N.J. Culbard who has illustrated every issue of the series.

You can purchase Tales from the Umbrella Academy: You Look Like Death issue #5 at your local comic shop (variant covers subject to availability), online, or digitally from Dark Horse Comics. The final issue, Issue #6, will be available on February 24. A complete 6-issue volume of the entire series will also be available on March 17. All previous issues of You Look Like Death, including all variant covers, and the pre-orders for Issue #6 and the 6-issue volume are available here.
