Sarah Drew, known best by her role as Dr. April Kepner on nine seasons of Grey’s Anatomy, is set to appear as a recurring character in the upcoming series Cruel Summer (formerly known as Last Summer), as first reported by Deadline.

Cruel Summer takes place from 1993 – 1995, where beautiful, small town Texas teen Kate (Olivia Holt) is abducted, and the once shy and awkward Jeanette (Chiara Aurelia) becomes the most popular girl in town seemingly overnight, before becoming the most hated person in the country. Each episode is from the point of view of either Kate or Jeanette, and the twists and turns will leave viewers wondering whose side they’re on. Drew will be playing the role of Cindy Turner, Jeanette’s mother, who is trying to hold her family together while being the target of the town’s gossip.

Cruel Summer is being written by Bert V. Royal, who is also an executive producer along with Jessica Biel, Michelle Purple, and Max Winkler. Winkler is also directing the series. The show is set to air on Freeform in 2021 but has no release date just yet. Stay tuned for more information!

Sarah joined Nerds and Beyond in 2019 to write about her many nerdy passions. With a Masters degree in Marine Biology, many question her decision to move to the desert (aka Las Vegas), but she is normally too preoccupied with teaching them about sea turtles to notice their concern. She refuses to fit in a box and lives her life on her own terms, sometimes in spite of societal norms. She loves to travel any chance she gets, which usually involves seeing her favorite band, Louden Swain. When at home, she enjoys binge-watching tv shows on her "to watch" list, working on craft projects, trying new recipes, and planning more travel.
