Nicholas Hoult and Paul Mescal have both had quite the spring. Hoult stars in Hulu’s The Great and has already garnered Emmy buzz for his hilarious, over-the-top portrayal of Emperor Peter of Russia, and Mescal has likewise gained a new following and awards attention due to his breakout role as Connell Waldron on Hulu’s Normal People. Both interviewed each other for Variety’s popular web series Actors on Actors, discussing their roles and their philosophies as actors.
Hoult discusses how fun it is to play Peter, a character with essentially no filter who often gets the funniest lines of the show, while Mescal discusses his reaction to his newfound fame. He also shares how he used the novel of Normal People to help with his portrayal of Connell, since the book contains many interior monologues that helped him build the character. Both Hoult and Mescal praise their female co-stars Elle Fanning (Hoult) and Daisy Edgar-Jones (Mescal), explaining that working with them allowed them a greater degree of creative freedom since they developed great working relationships with them.
