After Ruby Rose’s exit as the lead role in The CW series Batwoman, TVLine has reported that Javicia Leslie (God Friended Me) will take up the mantel of the popular superhero.

Leslie will play a new character, Ryan Wilder, who will prepare to step in for Kate Kane as the new Batwoman. The official description describes Ryan Wilder as “likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed. She’s also nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the Batsuit before her.” Regardless of personality differences between the two, Ryan Wilder will also be an out lesbian.

Even more importantly, Leslie is also a member of the LGBTQ+ community, continuing to bring representation to the screen. In a statement to TVLine, Leslie says:

“I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television, and as a bisexual woman, I am honored to join this groundbreaking show, which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community.”

The first season of Batwoman is available to stream on The CW website, The CW App, and HBO Max.
