D23 Expo Special Look for ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’

The ninth and final installment of the Skywalker saga is rapidly approaching, and Star Wars fans across the world have been waiting with bated breath to find out how J.J. Abrams and Lucasfilm will close out the final chapter of this epic, otherworldly tale that has captivated generations of fans since 1977. With less than four months to go, we’ve been given another peek at what to expect from Episode IX.

Disney’s D23 Expo treated attendees to a Special Look for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which has now been officially shared with the public as of this morning. A new poster for the film was also revealed at the D23 Expo.

The first half of the video takes a cruise down memory lane, showing clips from Star Wars: A New Hope up through Star Wars: The Last Jedi. We’re reminded of the beloved characters that swept us up into the world of Star Wars many years ago, and the events that led this story to the final precipice that it sits upon today.

In the second half, we’re given quick glimpses of new footage from the upcoming final film. Everything seems business as usual and consistent with the vibe of the first official trailer — until the final moments. Without warning, Rey appears, and she’s donning a black cloak and wielding a red double-bladed lightsaber. If you haven’t had your Monday morning coffee yet, rest assured that your eyes were not playing tricks on you.

It’s important to keep in mind that this wouldn’t be the first time that preview footage for a Star Wars film contained something misleading, as we could simply be looking at the product of another Force vision. However, with the loss of Luke Skywalker in the previous film, all bets are off for where Rey’s path will end up in The Rise of Skywalker.

Depending on where you’re located across the globe, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will land in theaters later this year between December 18-20.
