It was a night full of fashion, frivolity and fandom at the Her Universe Fashion Show at San Diego Comic Con! Guests were treated to twenty-four different nerd-inspired runway looks, all created by original designers. Nerds and Beyond was in attendance to see the best the geek couture the world has to offer – and we were absolutely blown away!

In addition to the runway designs, we also previewed some of the upcoming lines for fangirl clothing retailer Her Universe, including Star Wars, Kiki’s Delivery Service and the fandom of the night, She-Ra! Ashley Eckstein (Star Wars), head of Her Universe, is a big fan of the original show, and announced that she will be voicing a character on the upcoming Dreamworks Animation She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. Ashley opened and closed the show with her one-of-a-kind transformative She-Ra and the Princesses of Power dress designed by the show’s 2014 winner Andrew McClaine with custom accessories designed by Harmony Leiker. Eckstein also debuted a stigma-breaking design for mental health with her On Our Sleeves™ themed dress and a custom pantsuit inspired by Disneyland’s beloved ride Haunted Mansion designed by Her Universe’s Fashion Show 2015 winner Leetal Platt.

The theme of the show was “The Power of Fashion”, and each look represented a character, idea or show that exemplified power for its creator. Featuring looks from shows like Game of Thrones, Veronica Mars, My Hero Academia, and DuckTales, there was something from every corner of fandom for everyone to enjoy. As always, Ashley kept the show flowing quickly through the various looks with her infectious smile and giddy enthusiasm. After we saw all of the looks walk the runway, guests got to vote for their favorite!

While we waited for the judges decision, as well as the audience’s, fans were treated to a Steven Universe themed Junior Designer Showcase. The ensembles were designed by kids 6-17 years old, many of whom ended up making the getups themselves to show off! Afterward, anyone who wanted to could take the opportunity to walk the runway themselves. People of all ages, shapes, sizes and abilities took to the stage to strut their stuff.

By the end of the night, everyone had already felt like they’d won – the entire experience was so positive. The winner of the Judges Award went to Adria Renee for her Destination: Isla Nublar dress, inspired by Jurassic Park. The look, which was a favorite of mine, was also accompanied by a martini and a purse that said “Clever Girl”. The winner of the fan favorite award was Sarah Hambly for her Bodak Green look inspired by Marvel’s Loki. With rhinestones and a hat with maximum drama, there was no wonder why it was such a hit.

We had such a blast at the show, and can’t wait to do it again next year!
