Emmy Award winning director David Nutter (Game of Thrones, The Flash, Arrow) has been tapped to direct the pilot for Batwoman a potential addition to the DCTV universe on The CW.  The order was handed down by writer and show runner Caroline Dries (The Vampire Diaries) on Jan 3, along with executive producer Greg Berlanti.  This comes on the heels of the appearance of Batwoman in the CW crossover special, Elseworlds, which premiered in December.

The crossover brought the DC Universe together with Arrow, Flash, and Supergirl and featured Ruby Rose (Orange Is The New Black) as Batwoman.  Rose will reprise that role in this new show as the first ever superhero series to be led by a lesbian character, played by Rose, an openly gay actress.

The premise of the show is summarized on IMDB.

“In the series, Kate Kane, armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.”

This pilot marks the first announcement for the CW and executive producer Berlanti for the upcoming 2019 season.  Heading into pilot season, Berlanti has many other scripts in development; only time will tell which come to fruition.
