We are now less than 100 days away from the premier of the Captain Marvel movie. Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) arrives on the big screen March 8, 2019. This is the first movie that Carol will appear in in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel fans were originally clued into her arrival at the end of Avengers: Infinity War in a post credit scene.

If you’re a fan of just the Marvel movies- but don’t read the comics, or don’t know where to start- you might not know much about Carol’s origin or the origin of the Captain Marvel character. Captain Marvel has been around for awhile-the character was created by Stan Lee and Gene Colan in 1967 as Mar-Vell- and has undergone many changes and adaptations since then. Carol Danvers- who was known as Ms. Marvel- took on the mantle of Captain Marvel in 2012. This series was written by Kelly Sue DeConnick. And to prepare for the upcoming movie- these comics are a great place to start.

THE DEFINITIVE ORIGIN OF CAPTAIN MARVEL! Carol Danvers was just a girl from the Boston suburbs who loved science and the Red Sox until a chance encounter with a Kree hero gave her incredible super-powers. Now, she’s a leader in the Avengers and the commander of Alpha Flight. But what if there were more to the story? When crippling anxiety attacks put her on the sidelines in the middle of a fight, Carol finds herself reliving memories of a life she thought was far behind her. You can’t outrun where you’re from — and sometimes, you HAVE to go home again. But there are skeletons in Captain Marvel’s closet — and what she discovers will change her entire world. Written by best-selling author Margaret Stohl and drawn by fan-favorite comics veteran Carlos Pacheco, this is the true origin of Captain Marvel.

This series is ongoing, and is a series of five comics in total. In this series we learn more about Carol, the girl from Boston, her family, and her life growing up before she became the famed superhero she is today. This series is by Margaret Stohl. The final issue is set to release December 19, 2018.

Behold the mightiest, fightiest super hero there is! Captain Marvel returns to her helm as Alpha Flight commander with the world cheering her on. She’s the biggest hero in the world – but has Captain Marvel become someone Carol Danvers no longer recognizes? New York Times bestselling author Margaret Stohl (Beautiful Creatures, Black Widow: Forever Red) makes her comics series debut in a blockbuster Marvel story decades in the making.

This series- also by Stohl- follows Carol as she is struggling with personal worries and fears as she resumes her duties as Alpha Flight Commander. Carol must keep her crew in line, and her past at bay as she deals with incoming threats including an army of Chitauri warriors and how to deal with Earth’s extraterrestrial refugee crisis.

The comic universe is vast with so many issues, timelines, universes, multi-verses, cross overs and characters. Hopefully this guide will help you navigate and learn more about Carol, her sense of humor, her powers and abilities, her beloved, and her love of Star Wars before the film’s debut.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige revealed that the upcoming film will be based largely on the comics by Kelly Sue DeConnick.

The history of Captain Marvel goes back and is rather confusing. The one we’re doing is based on Carol Danvers and in particular, the Kelly Sue DeConnick run, which has only been around the last few years, but is really quite inspirational for us.
