Cassian Andor fans, rejoice!

It was announced today by Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger that Diego Luna will be reprising his role as the beloved (yet short-lived) rebel spy from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in a live-action series. The show will be exclusive to Disney+, Disney’s upcoming streaming service. Lucasfilm is slated to begin production on the series in 2019, with no confirmed release date as of yet.

When Rogue One hit theaters in 2016, audiences were introduced to an array of unfamiliar yet captivating characters within the Star Wars universe. Feedback on the new characters was bittersweet, as Jyn Erso, Cassian, and the rest of the crew ultimately perished at the conclusion of their heroic mission. Considering that Rogue One leads almost directly into the opening of the original Star Wars: A New Hope, their fate was inevitable.

Viewers were left resigned to the fact that two hours of screen time was all that they would get with the Rogue One cast, until now. Luna’s new, untitled adventure as Cassian Andor (described as a “rousing spy thriller”) will take place prior to the events of Rogue One, during the early stages of the Rebellion.

In a statement for Starwars.com, Luna said:

“Going back to the Star Wars universe is very special for me. I have so many memories of the great work we did together and the relationships I made throughout the journey. We have a fantastic adventure ahead of us, and this new exciting format will give us the chance to explore this character more deeply.”

This is the second Star Wars series that is being developed for Disney+, the first being The Mandalorian (which will be set later in the Star Wars timeline, after the fall of the Empire). Disney and Lucasfilm’s willingness to explore the potential of smaller, untold Star Wars stories is exciting news for fans both new and old.
