‘Sherlock’ Fans in for Longest Hiatus Yet

In a recent Radio Times interview, Sherlock creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss finally hinted at just how long fans will have to wait for season 5, and the outlook isn’t good. Though it has already been a year since the season 4 premiere of the popular BBC series, it seems 221B Baker Street will remain empty for at least another two to three years.

“We haven’t got an immediate plan, but I would remain surprised, given the collective enthusiasm we have for it, if we didn’t do it again,” remarked Moffat in the interview. “When, I don’t know. I think maybe the time for a longer gap is upon us, I don’t know.”

Gatiss, however, did give a reason for the longer gap, “We’re doing Dracula, which is going to take two years at least.”

“We’re not going to do Sherlock whilst we’re doing Dracula. So it’s not going to happen in the immediate future. Never say never, but no – we don’t have any idea,” continued Gatiss about their new project and the fate of Sherlock.

Moffat gave fans some hope though, “I could see us making more Sherlocks. I could see us making Sherlocks way in the future.”

As consolation, fans of the duo will receive a new series based on Dracula.

“It’s in early stages. We’ve had a lot of talks, a lot of little meetings throwing ideas around. We’re going to go away to start writing it next month,” said Gatiss.

“In Stoker’s novel he is an old man who does get younger, that’s rarely done,” said Gatiss when asked what kind of person he has in mind for Dracula. “I have no idea who it is going to be though.”

“Once we get moving we will move fast,” said Moffat of the timeline for Dracula.

Though the wait will be possibly the longest yet, fans will hopefully get to see Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson back in action on the streets of London. Perhaps Dracula will slake the thirst of fans in the meantime.
