Supernatural Day: Celebrating More Than Just a Television Show

September 13, 2016 marked the eleven year anniversary of the premiere date of the pilot episode for Supernatural- which is now the longest running sci-fi show in the US. At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con it was announced that Supernatural Day would be set aside to commemorate the first airing of the show.

The hashtag #SupernaturalDay became a world wide trending topic within the first few hours of the day Tuesday – staying there for most of the day – with the show’s cast, crew and fandom all tweeting out their favorite things about the show. Twitter was filled with fans tweeting about their favorite quotes, episodes, and pictures of the cast, but another theme was common as well, and that was how the show and it’s fandom had changed them and their lives. Some have been with the show since September 13, 2005, while others have only been in the fandom for a few short years.

But what is it about this show that is so special that has kept it on the air for so long in spite of network, scheduling changes, and even a writer’s strike? Simple. The fans. They have stuck around through the years and through these changes. Not only because the show is well written and the chemistry of the cast, but that there’s something for everyone. Action, romance, monsters, coupled with an amazing cast – you can’t lose. And Supernatural hasn’t. It’s because of these elements that the fan base is so large and so devoted. But, it’s not just the fans of the show that are devoted, but the cast and the crew itself are devoted to and supportive of the show and the fans also.

The cast of Supernatural truly give back to the fans in ways that many other actors don’t. On top of all the fan conventions they attend globally throughout the year, they interact with fans on social media and have various charities set up. Earlier this year actors Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins helped fund a crisis and suicide prevention hotline with the help of the fanbase. That interaction is what makes the relationship with the fans and the cast so special. It’s not just a fandom, its a family that has supported its members in so many ways.

Throughout various fundraising campaigns for different charities the cast have also shared and supported powerful and important messages. Jared Padalecki has been very open with his struggles with anxiety and depression and through this helped fans to face and be open with their mental health as well. Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins reminded them that they are not alone in their struggles. Kim Rhodes and Briana Buckmaster helped them to embrace their differences and be wayward against the social norms. Osric Chau encouraged the spread of kindness and good deeds. These themes have spread to the fans reminding them to always keep fighting, that they’re not alone, that they’re wayward and to be kind to the world and to themselves.

Supernatural heads into it’s twelfth season this October, and with many exciting things in store shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon. But, even once the show does come to an end, it will forever leave a legacy through the SPN Family.
